Statement on Ukraine and Russia

We at Mannheimer Swartling are horrified by the military aggression against Ukraine and the atrocities being committed against the Ukrainian people. We are supporting the UNHCR with financial donations to provide humanitarian aid to those forcibly displaced. We will continue to find ways to help Ukraine, the Ukrainian people, and the Ukrainian legal community as long as is needed.

Mannheimer Swartling has suspended its operations in Russia with immediate effect and we are analysing whether we can leave the Russian market in an orderly manner and with due care to our Scandinavian clients and Russian colleagues. We are not accepting any work for Russian clients at any office. As of this week, our Swedish lawyers who have been based in Moscow have been relocated and we will take every step to ensure that our Russian colleagues are taken care of and receive the assistance they need.

International trade, under the Rule of Law, has been an exceptional way of tying economies together and stabilising relationships between nations. As a commercial law firm, we have sought to play our small part in contributing to that norm-based international trade system, by ensuring that the transactions and disputes we assist in are held to the highest legal and ethical standards. We will always be optimistic that justice and international trade are better served by an international presence, than by isolation, but the past week has tragically shown us that the integration of economies and the mutual ties created by trade have not worked to ensure peace.
