Boliden secures permit for continued mining operations at Aitik
The Land and Environment Court in Umeå has granted Boliden Mineral AB a permit under the Environmental Code to continue mining operations at Aitik in Gällivare.
The Aitik mine is Sweden’s largest open-pit mine and Europe’s largest open-pit copper mine. Copper plays a critical role in electrification and the green transition and has been designated by the EU as a strategic raw material. The permit enables continued long-term mining operations at Aitik and covers, amongst other things, the continued extraction and processing of up to 45 million tonnes of ore per year. The permitting process was comprehensive and addressed a large number of legal issues, including emissions to water and air, species protection, dam safety, financial security and consideration for the reindeer herding interests. The permit decision has been appealed.
