Region Stockholm procures helicopter emergency medical service

In 2025–2026, Region Stockholm conducted a procurement procedure for the provision of a helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) within Region Stockholm’s healthcare system. An agreement with the supplier was entered into in spring 2026.

The helicopter emergency medical service forms a critical part of Region Stockholm’s emergency healthcare services and is used to provide care for and transport ill and injured patients in situations where time is of the essence and where transport by road is either not possible or sufficiently rapid. The awarded contract comprises a comprehensive undertaking for the provision of the air ambulance helicopter service, including the provision of an air ambulance helicopter, pilot and other personnel. The assignment also involves coordination with other road-based emergency response resources and the relevant parts of Region Stockholm’s emergency healthcare services, as well as the organisation of and participation in training and exercise sessions.

Mannheimer Swartling advised Region Stockholm on the procurement. The firm’s team consisted primarily of Niklas Sjöblom, Johanna Jonsson, Oscar Aspelund, Lina Lundberg and Rebecca Chamoun Andersson.
