Ebba Birkflo receives the Mannheimer Swartling Artist Scholarship
The Mannheimer Swartling Artist Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating student from the master’s programmes at one of Sweden’s leading art schools. This year, the selection comprised exhibiting students from the Royal Institute of Art’s final Master of Fine Arts exhibition. Through the scholarship, Mannheimer Swartling aims to support promising talent in the field of contemporary art and to strengthen artistic practice at an early stage.
This year, the scholarship has been awarded to Ebba Birkflo. According to the jury, Ebba has developed a distinctive visual language, combining playfulness with respect for ancient techniques and motifs. In the painting Recipe for a Fifth Season, the contemporary ballpoint pen meets the chalk grounds of antiquity, while deeply rooted superstition encounters contemporary art’s ability to nuance and expand our understanding of reality.
“Being able to support and follow an artist’s development at an early stage is meaningful and inspiring. We are particularly pleased that this scholarship enables us to recognise an artist whose work demonstrates originality and a distinctive artistic voice,” says Daniel Khayyami, Partner at Mannheimer Swartling.
“A free and vibrant cultural life is a fundamental part of an open society, one in which culture is allowed to exist on its own terms. Through the MSA Arts initiative, we aim to foster an environment that nurtures artistic expression and offers fresh perspectives. The Artist Scholarship is one tangible way for us to contribute to this,” says Fredrik Ringquist, Partner at Mannheimer Swartling.
“Throughout the year, I follow the work of all graduating students and their exhibitions at Galleri Mejan. I am always struck by how rewarding it is to see the wider world engage with our students’ work, as reflected in the jury’s thoughtful and well-founded citation. I am delighted that the Mannheimer Swartling Artist Scholarship will provide Ebba Birkflo with particularly strong support as she continues to develop her artistic practice beyond the Royal Institute of Art,” says Sanne Kofod Olsen, Vice-Chancellor of the Royal Institute of Art.
The jury for the Mannheimer Swartling Artist Scholarship comprises:
- Ann-Sofi Noring, Honorary Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts
- Oscar Carlson, Curator and Founder of Issues Gallery
- Charlotte Lund, Art Advisor
- Fredrik Ringquist, Partner at Mannheimer Swartling
- Daniel Khayyami, Partner at Mannheimer Swartling
The scholarship is awarded within the framework of MSA Arts, the firm’s arts and culture initiative, which creates opportunities for employees and other participants to come together through a variety of artistic expressions. Since its launch in 2023, MSA Arts has brought together initiatives and collaborations in the fields of visual art, music and literature. The initiative aims to promote creativity, reflection and learning through recurring programmes, collaborations with artists and partnerships with leading cultural institutions.
