Nordic Sugar has commissioned a new and extended sugar factory in Örtofta

Nordic Sugar AB (‘Nordic Sugar’) has commissioned a modernised and extended sugar factory in Örtofta. The sugar mill, originally built in the 1880s, is now one of Europe’s most technologically advanced and competitive facilities, annually processing over 2,000,000 tonnes of sugar beet into various food products. The strategic investment ensures long-term sustainable sugar production in Sweden and will contribute to a 50 per cent reduction of CO₂ emissions from the mill by 2030.

Nordic Sugar, part of the German Nordzucker Group, is Sweden’s only industrial-scale sugar producer. The company has previously had its operations divided between the plant in Örtofta and a nearby plant in Arlöv. Through the now commissioned project, Nordic Sugar has gathered its production to a single plant in Örtofta, and the operations in Arlöv have been discontinued. The strategic investment in Örtofta has been prepared since 2018 with the aim of strengthening the company’s position in the European market.

In addition to modernising sugar production in terms of logistical benefits and resource efficiency, Nordic Sugar has also aimed to preserve jobs and further develop existing solutions in the Nordzucker Group’s other factories, all to contribute to a strong and sustainable food industry in Sweden.

The project has involved extensive refurbishment of existing production lines and the addition of a brand new syrup and sugar solution factory. The previous distribution and logistics chains within the mill have been replaced with state-of-the-art packing and unloading functions combined with a robotised high-bay warehouse. The high-bay warehouse has been designed to optimise storage and distribution, providing significant logistical benefits and resource savings for Nordic Sugar.

The contracts cover a wide range of technical disciplines and forms of procurement from construction, material procurement, consultancy services, technical installations and DCS systems to advanced robot deliveries. The legal counselling has also included ongoing project support, including management of various changes and additions as well as handling of disagreements in the respective contracts, all to ensure an efficient and smooth commissioning of the factory.
