New legislation provision – Reporting Obligations for Absence Due to Childcare

The government has in a proposal suggested that information about absences should be submitted in conjunction with the employer’s declaration. This applies when the absence is such that it may entitle the employee to parental benefits or temporary parental benefits. The information will be used by the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan) to verify these parental benefits.

The proposal entailed that the information will be received by the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket), which will then forward the information to Försäkringskassan. A supplementary confidentiality provision was also proposed for information about absences from work due to childcare that occurs at Försäkringskassan in contexts other than a case.

The Riksdag approved the proposal which entered into force on 1 January 2025.
