Joakim Paasikivi appointed Honorary Doctor at Jönköping University

Jönköping University has appointed Joakim Paasikivi as an Honorary Doctor. The award recognises individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of research and education at Jönköping University.

Joakim became known to the broader public in connection with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, when he frequently appeared in Swedish media as a military strategy expert. He has had a distinguished career in the Swedish Armed Forces and previously served as a lecturer in military strategy at the Swedish Defence University in Stockholm and the Baltic Defence College in Estonia. He also served in Finland and held several leadership roles in intelligence and security services. In 2024, he joined Mannheimer Swartling as Senior Geopolitical Advisor. In this role, Joakim supports the firm and its clients with strategic advice on matters relating to geopolitics, global security and security protection matters related to business. He also continues to participate in public discussions on these topics.

Joakim Paasikivi has for a long time made outstanding contributions as an educator and analyst in security policy, geopolitics, and international relations – fields highly relevant to social science research and sustainable societal development. Through his unique combination of academic grounding, military experience, and pedagogical skill, he has helped strengthen the public dialogue on issues concerning democracy, security, and societal preparedness”, reads part of the reasoning behind the appointment.

The conferment ceremony will take place on 29 November as part of Jönköping University’s Academic Ceremony.
