SL enters into agreement for new trains for Saltsjöbanan
The Public Transportation Administration in the Stockholm Region (SL) entered into an agreement with Skoda Transportation on 11 November 2025 for the delivery of new vehicles for Saltsjöbanan. The order comprises 16 vehicles worth approximately SEK 1.56 billion, with an option for an additional 15 vehicles. Traffic is planned to start at the turn of 2029/2030.
The new trains, X25, will replace the over 50-year-old trains currently operating on the line. Each vehicle will be approximately 36 metres long, and up to three vehicles can be coupled together to form a 108-metre train.
The design of the new trains will commence in 2026, when the final technical solution as well as exterior and interior design will be determined. Manufacturing of the vehicles will begin in 2027. The first vehicles will be delivered to Stockholm for testing in 2029.
Mannheimer Swartling is advising SL in the project. The firm’s team primarily consists of Anders Bergsten, Ellen Alders, Sven Vaxenbäck, ÅsaSara Hoas, Jesper Svensson, Carl Kjellin, Johanna Jacobson och Mika Gauffin.
