SOS Children’s Village Les Cayes inaugurated in Haiti – Mannheimer Swartling partner Michael Karlsson participates in ceremony
Mannheimer Swartling partner Michael Karlsson participated in the inauguration of the new SOS Children’s Village Les Cayes in Haiti in his capacity as chairman of SOS Children’s Villages Sweden. This is SOS Children’s Villages’ third village in the country and has been financed by funds from donors in Europe and the US; the Akelius Foundation is the largest Swedish donor.
The SOS Children’s Villages Emergency Programme for Haiti, launched after the 2010 earthquake, includes a series of construction, reconstruction and renovation projects. In addition to the new village in Les Cayes and the existing Children’s Villages in Santo/Port-au-Prince and Cap Haitien, SOS Children’s Villages also supports community centres, family strengthening programmes, and vocational training centres. SOS Children’s Village Les Cayes is located in the southern part of Haiti and will support up to 135 children in 14 SOS families. Apart from the SOS mothers and aunts, SOS Children’s Village Les Cayes will be staffed by social workers, family facilitators, a child development assistant and a village director on location. The Village also provides support and assistance to children and families in the nearby areas.
Mannheimer Swartling has a longstanding partnership with SOS Children’s Villages Sweden and provides financial support for emergency relief for SOS Children’s Villages. Since 2010, the firm makes a Christmas donation to a SOS Children’s Village in Tamale, Ghana. Michael Karlsson is a partner at Mannheimer Swartling and has served as the Chairman of SOS Children’s Villages Sweden since 2008 (and served on the organisation’s board since 2003). He is also a board member of the international umbrella organisation SOS-Kinderdorf International with headquarters in Innsbruck, Austria.
