Facebook builds data centre in northern Sweden
Mannheimer Swartling has advised Facebook Inc and its Swedish subsidiary Pinnacle Sweden AB in the establishment and construction of a data centre in Luleå, Sweden. This is Facebook first data centre outside the United States and it will be the largest data centre of its kind in Europe.
The first phase of the project consists of a 28,000-square metre server building and two transformer substations. The site can be scaled to accommodate three server buildings. The construction cost for the first phase is estimated at SEK 800 million. Pinnacle Sweden AB is the employer in the project while a joint-venture of NCC Construction Sverige AB and DPR FCI Construction AB will be the turnkey contractor. ABB AB will be the turnkey provider for two 170/24 kV turnkey transformer substations. The first building is expected to be completed by December 2012.
Mannheimer Swartling has acted as legal adviser to Facebook Inc in the negotiations and conclusion of the construction agreement, property purchase agreement, permit applications and all other agreements. The firm’s team was led by Klas Wennström, primarily assisted by Johannes Harlevi, Julia Westling and Thérèse Bäverlind. Hans Andréasson advised on energy procurement agreements.
